Check out the Archive's weekly Internet radio show

Sounds from the Vaults of the Ethnomusicology Archive

Due to scheduling conflicts, our Archive radio show, "Sounds from the Vaults of the Ethnomusicology Archive" has been temporarily suspended. We hope to resume the show in the coming months. The Archive appreciates everyone's patience and interest.

The show's many hosts spin tunes pulled from the Archive's tens-of-thousands of recordings. Sounds range from traditional rabab music of Afghanistan to hyper-glossy Japanese pop. You can "tune in" to the streaming show by 1) going to http://www.uclaradio.com/, 2) clicking "Listen Now!", and 3) choosing your preferred media player (usually Windows Media for PC and Quicktime for Mac).

In an effort to broaden the audibility of our collections, the Archive airs a weekly Internet radio show. Begun in fall 2002, the show is entitled "Sounds from the Vaults from the Ethnomusicology Archive." During the academic year we broadcast on www.uclaradio.com. The Archivist doubles as the show's host and spins tunes pulled from the Archive's tens of thousands of recordings, playing everything from traditional rabab music from Afghanistan to hyper-glossy Japanese pop. A Daily Bruin article about the radio show is available online.

The Archive encourages participation and input from UCLA students, staff, and faculty. During the 2003-2004 academic year, guest speakers and performers have included Byzantine chanter Yanni Afendolous, ethnomusicologist Sam Parnes, and Visiting Professor of Ethnomusicology José Antonio Robles Cahero. Mr. Afendoulus performed examples of Byzantine Chants, Mr Parnes discussed his Filipino music research interests, and Professor Robles Cahero discussed and played examples of indigenous music from Mexico and Central America. Professor's Robles Cahero's musical examples were drawn from the collections of the Centro Nacional de Investigación, Documentación e Información Musical in Mexico City, where he is former Director. To raise awareness about the show, DJ Mwana Comete and Vallier performed a lunchtime set on February 5th, 2003, at UCLA's Bruin Plaza. This hour-long DJ-fest, heralded as an "Ethnomusic Dance Party," introduced lunching students, staff, faculty, and casual passerbys to the variety of sounds from the vaults of the Ethnomusicology Archive.
