Donating to the Archive
In the nearly half a century since its founding, the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive has amassed a collection and developed a range of services that places it among the top traditional music archives in North America. We could not have accomplished this without the generosity and vision of friends, alumni, and faculty. The continued commitment of our university community is critical if we are to maintain the depth and breadth of our collections. As the cost of audiovisual materials and electronic resources continue to soar, purchasing power for archival collections supported with state funds continues to shrink. Therefore, we are asking the Archive's users and friends to consider their role in securing the future of the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive's extraordinary collections for future generations.

Gifts of Materials - The UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive gratefully accepts gifts of audiovisual materials. Making a donation to the Archive is easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Contact an Archive Librarian: You can call, stop by, or write to us and let us know what your materials consist of. Contact information can be found on our home page.
  2. Donate Materials: If the materials fit within our collection development policy, we will set an up appointment to accept your donation.
  3. Fill Out and Sign Forms: Along with your donation of materials and supporting documentation we ask that you include a completed Depositor Information Form and a completed Depositor Consent Form. Both forms are available here.

Tax Deductions & Appraisals - Donations to the Archive may be tax deductible. The Archive does not endorse any particular appraiser and donors are free to approach an appraiser of their choice. Professional appraisers should be contacted if you want your collection evaluated for tax purposes or for sale. To view a list of professional appraiser associations and societies, click here.

Other Kinds of Gifts

  • Securities - The full-market value of gifts of appreciated securities is tax deductible. In most cases, appreciation in the value of the security benefits the Ethnomusicology Archive and is not taxable to the donor.
  • Matching Gifts - Many employers will match employees' gifts to the Ethnomusicology Archive. Send a gift accompanied by a matching gift form obtained from the employer's personnel or employee relations office.
  • Real Estate - Real property, either in its entirety or in part, can be deeded to The UCLA Foundation to benefit the Ethnomusicology Archive. It is possible to arrange a sizable tax deduction by deeding a home to the Ethnomusicology Archive, while continuing to occupy the property for life.
  • Gifts with Lifelong Income - Donors may transfer money, securities, or real estate in trust to the Ethnomusicology Archive and receive income for themselves or another, for life. The trust can be managed by The UCLA Foundation at no cost to the donor. Donors may receive immediate tax benefits, and ultimately the Ethnomusicology Archive receives the trust property.
  • Bequests - In writing a will or living trust, donors can specify that they would like their estate to benefit the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive. In recognition of alumni, friends, faculty and staff who have chosen to benefit the university through planned giving, they are welcomed as members of the prestigious First Century Society. Planned gifts include gifts through wills, living trusts, charitable trusts, charitable gift annuities, retirement plans, or other estate planning arrangements.
  • Qualified Retirement Plans - Naming The UCLA Foundation as a beneficiary of your qualified retirement plan (IRA, KEOGH, 401(k) or 403(b)) may be particularly advantageous; doing so may result in more assets being passed on to your heirs than if you make a bequest from other funds in your estate.
