Accessing the Collections
How to Search the Collections
Information about the Archive's collections can be accessed in our
online catalog, ethnomusicat.
Archive's holdings are also accessible on Melvyl,
University of California's on-line database, and World
Cat (both Melvyl and World Cat are limitted to on-campus and
proxy access
only). Additional information about the Archive's non-commercial
field recording collections can be found on our Selected
Field Recordings pages.
Listening to and Viewing Archive Materials
Archive materials must be used within the Archive. Archive materials
do not circulate and dubbing of Archive materials is not allowed.
Many of our collections are stored off-site, (e.g. Colin McPhee
Collection, Don Ellis Collection, East Asian Collection, Kunst Collection,
etc.). If you are planning a visit to the Archive in order to research
such a collection, we require three days advance notice so that
we can page your requested items.
Copyright Policies
The UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive does not own the copyright for
most of its collections and materials. Unless the copying you request
qualifies as fair
use as defined by U.S. Copyright Law, only the copyright owner
can give permission for copying, reproduction, and/or use of copyrighted
material. In other words, though the Archive is willing to reproduce
an item from its collections at the request of a reader or researcher,
the Archive cannot grant permission to publish copyrighted materials.
Neither can the Archive waive copyright as it applies to materials
in its holdings. Additionally, Archive staff are unable to conduct
copyright searches and cannot counsel readers and researchers in
the application of copyright law.
At the beginning of your research you are encouraged to consult
with Archive staff to determine whether, and to what extent, fair
use copying is permitted, the cost required, and the estimated time
for completion of your request. Therefore, if you are interested
in obtaining copies, reproductions, or permission for use beyond
fair use, you are encouraged to obtain written and signed permission
from the rights holder prior to consulting Archive staff..
Requesting Copies of Archive Materials
All copying requests are reviewed by the Archive staff and are processed
in the order received. On occasion, copying requests can take six (6) weeks to complete -- sometimes longer, depending on the
length of the request queue or the size of the order. More information
about copyright and UCLA Libraries' policy regarding copyright can
be found here.
