From the 1950s to July, 2008 there have been 384 graduate degrees awarded in the fields of ethnomusicology and systematic musicology at UCLA. Of these, 169 were Ph.D. degrees and 215 were M.A. degrees. The first Ph.D. degrees were awarded to Elizabeth May ('58) and William Malm ('59).
The first B.A. degree in ethnomusicology was awarded in 1993. However, students who received a B.A. in music with a specialization in the ethnomusicology date to the 1960s. From 1993 to July 2008, 266 B.A. degrees in ethnomusicology have been awarded.
