Dear Alumni and Friends,

At UCLA, the Spring quarter is often bulging with activities, and
Spring 2006 is no different.

At this time, many students are involved in major milestones and
transitions (completing the B.A., M.A. or Ph.D.; taking the doctoral
qualifying exams; defending the Ph.D. topic proposal or dissertation,
etc.). As you probably remember from your days at UCLA, these can be stressful times. So we wish all students the best.

In the last few weeks, some of you have sent us information about
major milestones taking place in your lives. We appreciate you
informing us and keeping in touch. For the most recent news, go to:
http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/newsevents/news/alumninews.htm.

We strongly encourage everyone to send us information about what
you're doing now. Just go to the Alumni Update page at
http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/alumni/alumniupdate.htm and complete the information. Thanks. To see an update to the Department's "Where Are They Now?" page, go to:
http://www.ethnomusic.ucla.edu/alumni/wherearetheynow.htm.

Plans for the department's World Music Institute (WMI) continue. If
you know of individuals who will benefit from such an experience,
please do not hesitate to let them know. Full and partial scholarships are available (click on the link for "fees" on the WMI web site to obtain more details)
http://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/WorldMusic/overview.htm. You should also know that applications will be accepted through the
middle of June 2006.

If you are in the Los Angeles area, we invite you to take advantage
of the many department events occurring in Spring. As usual,
activities abound (see below for just a few). Although some events
have already passed, there are many still to come. All performances
are free. For more details, also see the department web site:

Ethnomusicology Undergraduate Student Organization (EUSO)
Continuing the momentum created with the hosting of a workshop by the Peru Negro ensemble in Popper Theater in Winter 2006, the undergraduates have planned several activities for Spring 2006.

a. VIBE potluck
This will be an approximately 2 hour event that will take place in the Schoenberg Courtyard on the evening of Friday, April 21 (7-9 PM), the Friday of 3rd week spring quarter. The organizers are hoping that all ethnomusicology affiliates -- undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff -- will attend.

b. Undergraduate Conference
EUSO has sent out a call for papers for a cross-disciplinary conference that will take place on Saturday, May 20, 2006, in Schoenberg. This is a new initiative for our undergraduates that we hope is successful.

Best wishes,

Jackie
