AUDITIONS
What is the difference in the audition for the Ethnomusicology World Music concentration and the Jazz Studies concentration?
Applicants for the World Music concentration are allowed to audition on any musical instrument and perform any style of music, western or traditional. Jazz studies applicants are required to perform an audition on an eligible jazz instrument, and their audition must emphasize jazz repertoire.
Are you allowed to audition for both World Music and Jazz Studies?
Only applicants who are capable of auditioning at an advanced level of jazz performance will be approved for jazz studies. If you truly feel you are capable and interested in both areas, we will consider scheduling an audition for both.
If I’m unable to attend the audition on the scheduled date, can I re-schedule for another date?
Since the audition is before a faculty committee, it is extremely difficult and unlikely we could re-schedule your auditions
If I’m unable to keep my audition appointment, what should I do?
Contact the student services office as soon as you can. You may be allowed to submit a videotape instead.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSIONS DECISIONS
How many applicants do you usually have, and how many are admitted?
The department has a steady state enrollment of 90 full time students, of which there are 32 jazz studies majors. The number of new students we admit is determined by the number of students who either graduated or left the major during the past year. Most years we receive about 85-100 applications, and approve about 25 new applicants.
Do you need to know how to play or be familiar with traditional or non-western music to get accepted?
No you do not, although that would most likely be an advantage.
Do you need to be able to read music to get accepted?
Some ability to read and understand music notation is expected.
Do ethnomusicology applicants have to take a music theory exam?
Starting with this year’s audition, all applicants for ethnomusicology will be required to take a brief music theory exam on the day of their audition.
