World Music Summer Institute
The World Music Summer Institute is a one-week program, designed to expose high school and community college students or interested community members to the repertoire and musical styles of one of four performance traditions:
Students learn to perform the music of their chosen tradition by studying with a master artist, and are introduced to the history, culture, and music theory of that tradition.
High school students may stay in a UCLA residence hall under the supervision of experienced counselors. The non-residential program is open to students of all ages.
Two units of academic credit are offered from the University of California following successful completion of the program.
Instructors teach regularly in the Department of Ethnomusicology. The Institute is directed by Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, chairman of the department.
