GOSPEL ARCHIVING IN LOS ANGELES

June 2004 – May 2005

Heritage Music Foundation & the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive Forge Partnership

"Why archive? It's a pledge to the future. Without archiving, it's easy to forget our past."

For nearly a century, Los Angeles has played a major role in the development of Gospel music. To preserve this history and raise awareness about Los Angeles' role as a center for Gospel, the Heritage Music Foundation and the UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive are embarking on a collaborative project to document LA Gospel music. Entitled Gospel Archiving in Los Angeles, or GALA, this yearlong project will focus on documenting LA Gospel events and on preserving and providing access to Gospel recordings held by the Heritage Music Foundation (HMF) and others in the community.  GALA is funded by a UCLA in LA grant from UCLA’s Center for Community Partnerships.

About the GALA Partners

·         Dr. Margaret Pleasant Douroux founded the Heritage Music Foundation in 1980. The Foundation is an LA-based non-profit dedicated to documenting, researching, and preserving LA’s Gospel tradition.
