Wenten, I Nyoman

I Nyoman Wenten has an MFA degree from the California Institute of the Arts and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from UCLA. Wenten's earliest studies were with his grandfather, a master puppeteer, musician, and dancer. His formal training was in Bali and Java and he holds degrees from Bali's Conservatory of Music and Dance, and the Indonesian Arts Institute in Yogyakarta, Java. In recent years he has been making recordings and producing CDs of gamelan music from all over Indonesia for CMP records of Germany. He is also an active composer, and he harmoniously incorporates Indonesian and Western motifs and instruments in his works. His dissertation is entitled "The Creative World of Ki Wasitodipuro : The Life and Work of a Javanese Gamelan Composer." Wenten is currently a visiting professor at UCLA and Chair of the World Music program at California Institute of the Arts.
