Thompson, Gordon Ross
Gordon Thompson received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1987. His dissertation is entitled "Music and Values in Gujarati-speaking Western India." Before coming to UCLA, Thompson attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He was able to conduct field work in Gujurat, India, under grants from the American Institute of Indian Studies and the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research (1981-82). From 1984-87, Thompson was a lecturer at California State University at Long Beach and California State University at Fullerton. His published works include "Towards a Social Understanding of the Music of South Asia" (1981), "Songs in Circles: Gujaratis in America" (1985), and "Garba and the Gujaratis of Southern California" (1985). Thompson is currently an Associate Professor in music at Skidmore College.
