Johnston, Thomas F.
Thomas F. Johnston received his Ph.D. from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was a Professor in the Music Department and in the Center for Cross Cultural Studies at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Alaska. For many years he lived and conducted research in various parts of Southern Africa. His publications include The Music of the Shangana-Tsonga : A Study in Cultural Context of the Vocal and Instrumental Music of a People of Mozambique and the Northern Transvaal (1972), "The Integrative Role of Dance in Shangana- Tsonga Social Institutions" in Dance: Current Selected Research (1989), and "Shangana-Tsonga Dance: Its Role in Exorcism, Initiation, and the Social Beer-Drink" in Anthropologie (1990).
