Jairazbhoy, Nazir

Nazir Jairazbhoy began his career teaching at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. During this time, Jairazbhoy made a series of lectures on North Indian music that were broadcast by BBC radio. In 1975 he served as Associate Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Windsor, Ontario. The same year he joined UCLA as Professor of Music. Jairazbhoy has also served as President of the Society for Ethnomusicology. His publications include The Rags of North Indian Music: Their Structure and Evolution (1971), Hi-Tech Shiva and Other Apocryphal Stories: An Academic Allegory (1991), Musical Journey Through India 1963-64 (1988), and The Bake Restudy (1984). He became the first chair of the Department of Ethnomusicology. Jairazbhoy retired from UCLA in 1994, but remains on the faculty as an Emeritus Professor.

Catlin-Jairazbhoy, Amy

Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy's research, writing, teaching, curatorial activities, and multi-media publications often have an applied focus, aimed at community development of minority traditions, especially in diasporic settings. She served as curator and presented the first concert and lecture tour outside India with a group of African-Indian Sidi performers from Gujarat, in September 2002, traveling with them in England and Wales. Her most recent publications include Sidi Sufis: African Indian Mystics of Gujarat (Aspara Media 2002: 79-minute CD) and the forthcoming volume co-edited with Indian Ocean historian Edward Alpers, Sidis and Scholars: Essays on African Indians (New Delhi: Rainbow Publications and New Jersey: Africa World Press, 2003).
